Freud would have us believe that we are 'naturally evil'. Driven by our drives for sex and violence which, if it wasn't for the superego, would turn us into savage beasts. How true is it? What would we be if it wasn't for the moral restrictions, laws and regulations imposed on us?
One of my favorite books is Golding's Lord of the Flies and it talks about the dystopia resulting in the total control of id over a group of stranded boys. It is a great illustration of what human nature is like when taken from the control of superego. There are traces of Freud's theory being true in today's life. The first one is the fact that the Internet is full of pornography websites and some even say that it would not have taken off if it wasn't for porn. Apart from the sex drive there is an apparent drive for violence. There are many videos depicting violence, abuse, animal cruelty and other disturbing things that 'nobody wants to watch'. But someone does watch them, even though it is horrifying, gruesome and tragic, people can't help but watch. Just like a more drastic version of fail videos.
"It is the id inside you", especially when we are on the Internet we might feel alone, out of reach of authorities, free of our superego, where we can embrace our violent and inherently bad nature.
