Believe Falsely or not to Believe at All?
Imagine Christmas: the feeling in the morning that someone has been there... The breeze of mysterious magic in the air... And only a few crumbs where the biscuits have been.
But the magic holds only for those who believe in Santa. I also believed once, very strongly. Some may say that it is only a silly game, but they do not know how wrong they are. For children it is an event of huge importance. Is Santa going to bring them what they asked for? How is he going to manage to go all around the world only in one night? Can reindeer really fly? And so on...
Santa Claus is just one of many examples of what people believe in, or they used to... Anyway, Santa, as it turns out, is not real. What about our other beliefs? Are some of them false too? And does it matter if they are?
In my opinion it is not important whether what we believe in is true, but what really matters is how we feel about our belief, what kind of feelings it triggers and how it shapes our world. For me it did not matter if Santa existed, I just knew he did. Even now I think it is a beautiful fantasy to have as a child.
I think that we should not always find proof for what we believe in, it is much nicer to just trust. And it is much easier to just trust blindly. This can be especially seen in religion. People believe in god without any substantial evidence, just because they want to. I think the concept of religion is a beautiful thing, how it has developed over the years, is a matter for a different discussion...
