Categorization of People

It is common knowledge that people tend to classify almost everything: animals, plants, objects, etc. people also tend to distinguish between each other. But is it okay to do that? Or can it be considered racism?

For many this is not an ambiguous situation. They immediately state that classifications among people are bad. racist and should not occur. I think, however, that this subject matter is controversial.

On the one hand, putting people into classes is wrong. Some are considered worse than others without any logical reason and therefore they are treated worse and discriminated. Especially nowadays with all the demonstrations for racial equality people fear to speak out loud the categorizing phrases like nationality or the skin color.

On the other hand, classifying people in terms of their appearance can be a necessity. For example at a crime scene when police have to file a report describing the suspect, they should be as accurate as possible. I don't see any racism in stating the obvious features of one's appearance. It is only when people feel superior to others because of these features, that racism occurs.
