Gatekeeping

 

       

  Gatekeeping is a form of information flow control and the same as with news, the information posted on social media is being controlled as well. The main issue that I personally encountered is the issue with copy righted materials. It is important that one is aware of the things that can or cannot be used and reused online. Content is re-processed and evaluated by gatekeepers, which is very often apparent on websites such as YouTube, where ‘undesirable’ messages are blocked or deleted.

  Especially in social media, individuals participating in the communications can act as gatekeepers too. They choose what information to share and what to withhold. Since most of the people, wanting to appear more appealing or in a certain desirable way, alter their profiles, as a result there is an altered, virtual reality created.
