Nowadays
with the rise of digital media it is easier to play tricks on people’s emotions.
The artificial, fictional reality is becoming more authentic and it is easier
for the audiences (or participants, in the case of interactive media) to
believe in its ‘realness’ and to develop empathy for fictional characters and
situations. If these experiences are purgatory remains questionable and
probably depends on the individuals who all perceive them differently and whose
emotions are triggered on various levels. I believe that the term ‘catharsis’
can have many meanings, depending on how people understand and face it.
Especially
non-linear forms of media can trigger deep thoughts and reflection upon the
meaning and nature of life. Through the distortions and renouncement of a
traditional portrayal of reality, they leave room for more interpretation and a
more personalized perception.
I strongly believe that any form of
reflection and a maybe more open gaze upon life and reality is something
everybody should do in order to become a better person. The results, however,
may vary depending on the person. Some may indeed experience ‘purification’ and
a clarity of mind; others may fall into despair and a sense of helplessness,
depending on a positive or negative interpretation.
